"Lauren is a healer disguised in a yogi’s body.  Every experience I’ve ever had working with Lauren has brought healing to every part of me: mind, body, emotions and spirit. She is a gift to the world!" ~Elizabeth

How would you describe the classes you are teaching now, in terms of the way you teach, how you focus, and what you are trying to offer?

I would describe the classes that I teach as Hatha Yoga. The way I teach is to meet each student where they are at. This depends on the energy of each individual student that comes to class, and while I am teaching class I address each student's needs.

I will have different students doing different things during the same class. For example, some students might need a more restorative practice while others might need a more energetic practice with a higher level of asana. Some students are working with injuries so I will have them modify poses,  as well as give them specific poses during the class to help with healing. In any class I teach, often students are doing very different things while I keep a unified, decompressing, and healing energy throughout the room. I am very encouraging of all students to meet themselves where they are at, and to begin now. Atta. I believe in hands on adjustments and healing touch ~ and try to work with every student in every class, every time I teach.

In all of my classes, I start by decompressing the students nervous system  ~  moving from the sympathetic nervous system into the parasympathetic nervous system. From there, I believe, that is the platform of all healing. I focus by connecting with each student that has come into the room to truly get a feeling for where they are at in that moment, and that helps me to help them.

What I am offering is a transparent, supportive, and healing environment. A class that has education, dialogue, and tools to inspire students to take care of themselves on and off the mat. I weave yogic philosophy and lifestyle into each class. I help students to understand scientifically the healing process and how to listen to their bodies, their hearts, and their spirits. My goal is teach and provide the tools for optimal self care. To offer an opening of the deepest layers of self to not only take care of themselves, but to take care of each other, and to take care of our world.

Depression tends to hit us on every level of our being, often all at once, which makes yoga the perfect antidote for the physical ramifications, mood swings, thoughts, and behaviors that it engenders. From a physiological perspective, depression affects the entire body, including the digestive, respiratory, hormonal, and cardiovascular systems. Yoga therapy’s main impact on our physiology is via the sympathetic and parasympathetic functions of the ANS. Depression creates a state of sympathetic/parasympathetic dis-regulation, which further impacts how we feel, what we think about, and how we behave.

Depression goes beyond feeling sad, which is a normal and healthy part of coping with what life hands you, including disappointment and loss. Sadness becomes pathological when its level of intensity, duration, or frequency begins to significantly impact your self-image and your ability to perceive the world around you or limits your role in life and the ability to function, heal, and take care of yourself.

Doing something, no matter how small, for yourself and/or for others, can generate and release positive energy and set you on the path toward wholeness. Cultivating determination, strengthening the will, and setting and activating intention are the cornerstones of yoga practice and can help you overcome habits and dysfunctional behaviors that can paralyze you and keep you depressed.

Yoga teaches us that we aren’t our feelings or our symptoms but live in multidimensional relationship with them. A therapeutic yoga sequence, designed specifically to ease depression and anxiety, will give you sustainable tools toshift  mental patterns, emotions, and internal state of being.
